These are directly out of my notes:
Understatement: taking a major/serious topic and making it seem non-important
Lampoon: full-length verbal portrait of a person which ridicules him/her in a biting manner (harsh)
Invective: direct denunciation or name calling (harsh)
Diatribe: prolonged invective; bitter and abusive speech or writing (harsh)
Caricature: a type of portrait, graphic or verbal, which exaggerates or distorts prominent features of a person without losing the likeness
Irony: the 3 types (situational, dramatic, verbal)..we learned these last unit
Sarcasm: caustic and heavy use of apparent praise for acutal dispraise
Parody: a close imitation of an author's style or work for comic effect or ridicule
Burlesque: High:treats an unimportant subject seriously
Low: treats an important subject in a comic/low manner. I think this is basically understatement.
Miosis (is that right?): Mr Feuer descirbed it as low burlesque/understatement, but with semi-sarcasm. Ex: Shakespeare was a pretty-good writer.
slapstick: broad comedy characterized by violently boisterous actions. This can be phyisical or verbal. Verbal example: the skit, "Who's on first.?"
Well... Mr. Feuer said there was, so there must be.
Do you know that skit...the one about Who's on first?

That's slapstick. Syrus is pretty good at it.
