What do you think are the best free ways to get a forum to be active? What are your favorite free promotion methods?

Our Getting Started article has lots of useful information about starting a new forum, I personally believe getting lots of traffic is one of the best ways, content is also king A mixture of both is sure the ingredients to sucess Sorry if that sounds corny!

Reduce the bots is one of the things too. Good Content and no spam. Regular members and traffic are the keys here

Spam drives people away like rotting fish. Put a link in your sig at other forums.

If you have a new forum, in addition to what has been given already, while you are at your keyboard have two browsers open to forum index and be logged in. In one browser, (if you haven't already done it) create another user. Refresh the page at regular intervals to make it appear that two are always online or if your software allows it, use the view who's online feature and have it auto refresh.
