SMF has never ran slow for me. Maybe you should try an updated version of it, its securty is much better than phpBB, also, whish is why I use it. There are also plenty of features that can be added on.

I am using vBulletin 3.6.8 but i have used SMF and IPB in the past.

I've been using vBulletin for my forums now, used to use phpBB on my old site but sold that awhile back

vBulletin is costly But its one of the best i ever seen
Its just a CMS with the Heaven of pluggins and the speed of accesing is also fine
and one of the most IMP feature is SECURITY it provides
