I used paid forum posting, I spent over $50 on it and it really kick started my forum, got lots of nice posts and then people started registering after they saw the activity.

I never paid people to post in my forums. But I have paid in other forums for some money. I think that paid forums do not do that well because users go there as long as they are paid and after the paying stops the forum is deserted.
